When is the best time fo the year to landscape? It’s a question we’re often asked and there is no simple answer. Everyone wants their yard to pop once springtime arrives and the birds start chirping. Over time, that’s achievable. In the interim, it takes a little bit of work throughout each season.
Spring
Many of us have the urge to start planting right when the ground thaws in spring. Resist that temptation. As we know from past New England springs, the weather fluctuates and a 70 degree day can be followed by a snowstorm or monsoon. Variations in weather can place undue stress on newly installed plants, flowers, and shrubs. Frost is a major factor and can prematurely kill new plantings.
Use the early spring to turn your flower beds and garden beds. Amend the soil with compost. And put together a plan for what you’d like to plant. As spring turns to summer and more consistent temperatures arrive, it is a good time to start planting.
Summer
The warmth and humidity of summer also places stress on your plants, flowers, and garden. During this time they will require more attention and regular watering to ensure roots take and last through the year; and for years to come.
Fall
The cooler temperatures and mild humidity of fall is one of the best times to embark on landscaping projects. Planting trees, shrubs, and perennials in the fall allows them the time to establish strong root systems so they are strong when the following spring arrives. The more developed a root system, the better a plant will perform. Something planted in the fall will have more time to grow than a plant installed in the spring.
Fall is also a time to install cold-weather plants such as mums and flowering cabbage which have become favorites for Halloween and Thanksgiving.
