Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common questions about our landscaping services, helping you make informed decisions for your outdoor spaces.

Design Works Landscaping has a proud and dedicated team of 25+ year-round landscape professionals. Each employee is specialized and trained in one or more of the services we offer. Having ample field staff and great managers gives us the ability to take on several projects at once. As the demand for projects increases, we adjust our workforce to accommodate our customers’ needs.

We work with DOL sponsored laborers and apprentices looking to increase their skills in the Landscape industry. Through dedicated training, support and an eagerness to learn from our team, we can schedule most projects within a customer’s desired timeframe.

That said, we can usually book most jobs within 3-6 weeks of our service contract being signed. If you are looking to get a project completed within our busy season, summer, or fall, please book your appointments in early spring to solidify your desired start and finish dates. We will do our best to accommodate your timeline within reason.

We’re so glad you asked! Yes. Our ideas go well beyond simply placing a pool in a back yard. It is so important to consider your whole program before installing a pool and to have a very logical and detailed plan. We consider pool size, placement and orientation, sun/shade, hardscaping, grading, plantings, maximizing the uses of spaces, dining and entertaining opportunities, site work costs, materials costs, aesthetics and function, property setbacks and requirements, and so much more. We work with reputable pool companies and our reliable network of electricians, plumbers, etc. We are happy to provide the services of sitework, hardscaping, landscaping, irrigation, lawn, etc. ourselves. Our landscape architects can even work on your behalf if any permitting is required for pool plan approval.

Yes! Design Works is unique in its capacity to design, install, and professionally maintain any landscaping project we take on. We prioritize our ability to deliver the required expertise and proficiency to adeptly manage and execute all phases of a project, including long-term maintenance post-installation.

We provide Design Consultations at a rate of $350.00. This includes an hour-long consultation with our Landscape Architect and a full comprehensive AutoCAD design to scale with dimensions. After your consultation, your designer/estimator can provide revision sessions if needed, materials recommendations, and estimates for the installation work.

Meeting with our standard estimators is completely free of charge and we encourage open and honest discussion with potential clients regarding price, ability to complete a project and timeframes. If you would like to meet with one of our estimators, please click here.

Design Works Landscaping generally sources our techo-bloc pavers and hardscape materials from Techo Depot in Haverhill MA or other reputable vendors of Unilock, Ideal and other quality hardscaping products. As for where we generally purchase our plants, we are proud to closely work with and purchase from Country Brook Farms, a local nursery right down the road from our shop here at 125 Wason Rd Hudson NH.

We believe there is great value in supporting local businesses and always try to source our plants and materials locally. However, we are happy to and can source specialty stone for those looking for specific aesthetics or uses. Ask more about our specialty stone here.

Yes! We work with local Engineers and Architects to provide professional Landscape Architecture plans, stamped by our Landscape ArchitectProfessional Landscape Architecture plans are generally prepared as part of a plan set required by Town Planning and Zoning Boards.   Please email jennifer@4designworks.com for more information.

What is a landscape architect?

Per the American Society of Landscape Architects, “Landscape architects create healthy, safe, and beautiful outdoor places for everyoneBeing a landscape architect requires years of education and experience and passing a national exam. They are licensed—just like doctors and engineers—to keep people safe and secure.”   Our Licensed Landscape Architect on staff studied Landscape Architecture at UMASS Amherst (an accredited bachelor’s program), interned at Copley Wolff Design Group and Beals and Thomas, Inc in Massachusetts, and passed the challenging Landscape Architecture Registration Exam in 2012.

While low maintenance is one of the most highly discussed topics during initial planning, projects will always require some maintenanceFor example, the catmint plant is one of the easiest garden plants with little care required during the entire growing season, however it does need to be cut back once in the fallPolymeric sand does a beautiful job finishing off patio joints but does involve some occasional touch upsWe will work with you to understand how you will use your space and how much time you must dedicate to upkeepIf low maintenance is your goal, we will incorporate ideas and materials to keep things as simple as possible.

While we would ideally like to help as many customers as possible, we do have limitations on projects that we take on so that we are able to provide a premier level of service to our client base.

Single service packages. We create maintenance packages to service your property in an all-inclusive manner. This enables us to deeply familiarize ourselves with your property, to bring out its full potential, and ensure we are meeting and exceeding our clients’ expectations in the process. Providing a single fall cleanup or single mow does not give us the opportunity to properly work and manage the landscaping and single services do not generally match our business offerings.

Small Projects. Single tree removals or single tree plantings, hardscape patio and wall fixes, installing other landscapers’ projects without a good plan, and small irrigation fixes are examples of projects that do not match our business offerings.

Residential Snow Plowing.  We are a Commercial Snow Removal company and do not provide residential snow plowing, except when servicing our Full-Service Maintenance Clients.

Although we appreciate being the first landscaping firm that comes to mind, there are some projects that may not be cost effective for us to complete or fall outside of our business offerings or service location range. Design Works Landscaping is a full-service design/build company staffed with landscape architects, project managers, and staff with a proud combined resume of 40+ years of experience utilizing elite commercial grade equipment.

We work towards creating long-term relationships with homeowners and managing an experience that they are comfortable with and excited about.  To provide this experience and work within our business offerings, we fit our openings to those we feel we can provide this level of service to.

If you are curious to see if we can help with your project, please feel free to inquire here as it is always encouraged to speak with our estimators.
